NPC, IDEG, Chief to commit political leaders to peace tomorrow

As the Ghana 2016 election inches closer the news media is dominated by a mixed bag of story headlines ranging from Civil Society groups calling on political party leaders to commit themselves to peaceful polls and promises made by the presidential aspirants as they beef up their campaigns.

The Daily Graphic with the caption “NPC, IDEG, chiefs to commit political leaders to peace tomorrow” states that the National Peace Council (NPC) would  tomorrow  hold a dialogue with  the  leadership of all political leaders and chiefs, dubbed the second  High  Level  Meeting  (HLM) to chart  the way  forward towards a peaceful election. The  Chairman of the NPC, the Most  Rev. Prof. Emmanuel  Asante, who made  the announcement  at a press conference in Accra yesterday, said  the HLM would  be organised in  collaboration with  the National House of Chiefs and the Institute  of Democratic  Governance (IDEG).

Ghana’s EC has never failed us” is a headline in the Ghanaian Times. The paper reports that with six successful elections, which have been described by the international community as credible, the European Union (EU) believes the 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana will follow a similar fashion. Ghana’s electoral commission has gone into the annals of world history as one of the most credible institutions in the world, when it comes to election.

The Daily Guide with the headline “Reject ‘dead goat’ presidents says Bawumia”. According to the paper the vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has taken a swipe at President John Dramani Mahama for saying that he (Mahama) is not a magician to solve the unemployment problem in the country. Dr. Bawumia said the Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over the last eight years had had more money than all past governments put together yet is unable to solve the challenges facing the country.

The Ghanaian LensI feel sorry for Bawumia ... NPP will use and dump him after doing its dirty work –Mahama”. According to the story President John Dramani Mahama has predicted that the NPP will dump its presidential running mate, Dr. Mahama Bawumia after using him for the party’s dirty job. He said he feels sorry for Dr. Bawumia because he would never be given the opportunity to lead the NPP when the time comes.

The Chronicle also with the headline “NPP uncovers NDC marked ballot papers”. According to the paper the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has found a reason to convince itself that the electoral commission (EC) is working against it, with the party’s latest discovery of already marked ballot papers smuggled into the Savelugu constituency of the Northern Region. Over the weekend, in that constituency, parliamentary ballot papers received, upon inspection, had traces of marks in the column for the candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which was to have effect of the column thumb-printed other than those of the NDC being validated.

Today “PPP will abolish BECEstates that Presidential candidate of the progressive people’s Party (PPP) Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, says a PPP government under his watch will scrape off the basic education certificate examination (BECE) system which serves as an avenue for admission into the senior high school (SHS). He made this observation when he addressed a mini-rally over the weekend at Matsekope in the Sege constituency in the greater Accra region, ahead of the December polls.

We will conclude today’s newspaper review with the headline in the Enquirer “Government ready to ensure violence–free elections – President Mahama”. According to the story President John Dramani Mahama has said there will be no violence during and after the general elections as government has mapped out the appropriate strategies to ensure peace. The president said this on Sunday, when he met the Bolgatanga traditional council, as part of his campaign tour to the region.
