10th November 2016 Ghana Elections Daily News Media Review

GHANA ELECTIONS 2016 DAILY NEWS REVIEW – 10TH NOVEMBER, 2016
The Electoral Commission (EC), having closed the curtains on the number of Presidential Candidates (PC) to contest the December 7 polls yesterday, the news media have a mixed bag of story headlines portraying the subject.

The Daily Graphic has its headline, ‘Race to Flagstaff House: Seven (7) on ballot after EC cleared Three (3) more.’ It writes that another major hurdle has been cleared for the conduct of the December 7 elections as the seven PCs qualified yesterday picked their positions on the presidential ballot paper. For the Daily Guide, ‘EC Okays seven (7), drops Eight (8) for presidential race’. It says, the EC has given the green light to the PC to contest the December election, while the Crusading Guide, captioned, EC ballots at last – Mahama 3rd, Nana Addo 5th, and writes, the two front runners in the 2016 presidential elections, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and New Patriotic Party NPP) have replicated the third and fifth positions they picked during the parliamentary ballot. For its caption, the Ghanaian Times writes, ‘EC approves three  (3) …and axes Ayariga, Akua Donkor, etc. The paper writes, three more candidates have been accepted by the EC to participate in the December 7 presidential elections, bringing to seven (7), the total number approved to contest the polls.

Besides, Daily Guide also reports on, ‘NDC boys on rampage at Odododiodoo. The paper writes, angry members of the NPP in the Odododiodoo constituency in Accra, yesterday, besieged the James Town police Station demanding the immediate release of their three members – Teddy Moore, Nii Koodi, and another man whose only name was given as Prince.

In addition, Rawlings urges election winners to embrace all, is also another headline of today. It reads, former president, Flt Lt Jerrry John Rawlings, has urged political parties to give an assurance that should their parties emerged victorious, members of the losing parties would have no reason to feel insecure.

Moreover, ‘Supreme Court rebuke EC’. The apex court in Ghana has rebuked the EC for failing to show up in court on serious constitutional matters. According to the Court, the absence of its members amounted to disrespect.

Furthermore, ‘EC hold ballot for parties’.  Balloting for position on the presidential ballot paper for the December 7 election was held at the EC’s headquarters yesterday, with the two main political parties, the NPP and NDC maintaining the same positions they had earlier picked for the parliamentary elections.
