Election 2016 will be very transparent - Charlotte Osei

Having come out from its litigations, and set the roadmap for the General Election on December 7, the Electoral Commission (EC) has dominated the media headlines today.

The Daily Graphic has its caption, ‘Election 2016 will be very transparent - Charlotte Osei.’ It reads, “The Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Charlotte Osei, has given an assurance that the December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections will be more transparent than the 2012”. The Daily Guide, with the headline, ‘We are ready for December seven (7) - EC’ states that, “the Chairperson of the EC, Mrs Charlotte Osei, has allayed fears that the commission is not prepared adequately to organise a successful election on December 7, 2016. The Ghanaian Times’ headline ‘EC to begin printing notice of polls’ is very assuring. The story reads, “after balloting for the presidential candidates on the ballot sheet, the EC has announced that it will start printing of the notice of polls today, as it heads into the final phase of   preparations for the December 7, general elections. According to the Daily Statesman with the headline, ‘Four (4) Telcos to do EC’s E-transmission of results.’ “The EC has just awarded contracts for the electronic transmission of collated results to four local mobile telephony companies.”

Still on the headlines, the Daily Graphic states that, ‘Disqualified aspirants disappointed with the EC”. ‘It reads, a number of disqualified presidential candidates have expressed their disappointment with the EC for not proving a level playing field for the conduct of the December 7 polls’.

Besides, the Crusading Guide captions, ‘Akufo-Addo condemns violent attacks …As he advocates free, fair elections.’ It says, presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo-Danquah, has condemned the wave of violent attacks on the party’s parliamentary candidates and activists across the country.

Furthermore, the Daily Guide has its headline, ‘Supreme Court blast EC’. It reads, the Supreme Court on Wednesday descended heavily on the EC, describing its persistent absence from court over matters of national interest as disrespectful’.

“Mahama’s 2nd Term will Economically Empower All”, is a headline in the Ghana Palaver. According to the story attributed to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, President John Dramani Mahama’s second term will ensure a thriving economy and sustainable jobs through industrialization for accelerated transformation and growth. He said this when he went to his home region, the Eastern region to drum home the need for the chiefs and the people to maintain Mahama and the NDC for a second term.

EC will not change format of ballot paper – Kofi Dzakpasu. According to the Daily Post, the EC is taking steps to minimize the incidence of rejected ballots in the next month’s election. Head of Communications at the Commission, Mr Eric Kofi Dzakpasu says the elections management body is determined to ensure that candidates are credited with votes they deserve. He made those comments when he was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show.

The headline in the Ghanaian Observer, Minister Calls for War … As Odododiodoo Boils, states that, the Accra Regional Police Command is investigating assault allegations against the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo and Sport Minister, Nii Lante Vanderpuye. This follows violent attack last Tuesday night on supporters of the main opposition NPP by thugs of the NDC shortly after a mammoth rally had been held in the constituency by the opposition party.

The Ghanaian Times also carries the headline, Akufo-Addo Promises Landing Beach at Ekumfi Otuam. According to the paper, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, NPP presidential candidate, has promised that should he be given the nod, his government will construct a landing beach at Ekumfi Otuam and name it after the late president John Evans Atta Mills.
