We start off with Myjoyonline’s
headline: “EC’s commitment to cleaningof register questionable – CODEO.” The National Coordinator of the
Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), Albert Arhin, has questioned
the preparedness of the Electoral Commission (EC) to conduct the clean-up of
the voters register and get rid of ghost names and double registrations. He
said the posture of the EC in reaction to calls to conduct the clean-up of the
voters register before the November election is a demonstration of its
unpreparedness to conduct the exercise.
Myjoyonline
also reports: “EC to hold pilotbiometric registration on Saturday” is also in the headlines of Myjoyonline.com.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is scheduled to conduct a nationwide pilot
biometric voter registration exercise on Saturday, March 12. According to a statement
signed by the Deputy Chairman, Operations, Amadu Sulley, ‘The Electoral
Commission has upgraded the Biometric Registration Kits (BVR Kits) for the
impending limited voter registration and subsequent exercises’. The statement
further called on political parties and prospective voters in the selected
polling stations to participate in the exercise.
Related to the above is the Citifmonline
story about the NPP raising red flag over EC pilot biometric registration: “EC’s pilot registration a ‘joke’” The
Director of elections of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Martin Adjei-Korsah,
has described the Electoral Commission’s (EC) nationwide pilot registration
process in some selected polling stations as a “joke” since in their view, it
will not address critical concerns they have raised ahead of the November
polls. He argued that the pilot exercise will not be an accurate reflection of
what is expected to happen during the actual elections.
In other news about
parliamentary primaries, Citifmonline reports that “NPP begs Nii Noi to return”. The Greater Accra Regional chairman
of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ishmael Ashitey, has told Citi News the party’s leadership will
convince Nii Noi Nortey to rescind his decision to contest the November
election as an independent candidate. Nii Noi finally declared his intention to
contest for the parliamentary bid of the Klottey Korle constituency in the
general elections independently, at a news conference held in Accra on Wednesday.
Also on parliamentary
primaries, Peacefmonline reports of “No Show at Hearing of Zanetor’s Case” at the High Court hearing the
eligibility case against the National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary
candidate for the Klottey Korley constituency Dr. Zanetor Rawlings. The
presiding judge, Kwaku Aka Boafo, was reported to have gone on a seminar but
the plaintiff MP of the constituency, Nii Armah Ashitey and his lawyer, Garry
Nimako were present as well as the media and other spectators. Nii Armah
Ashitey who is also the incumbent MP dragged Dr. Rawlings to court challenging
her candidature as a non-registered voter.
We conclude on today’s online
elections news review with the Peacefmonline story on: “Chairman Wontumi Denies Extorting Money And Bribe Allegations From NPP MP”. The Ashanti Regional Chairman of
the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako has denied
vehemently allegations that he is extorting bribes from members of parliament
in the metropolis. NPP’s Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North has
accused him of sabotaging the efforts of incumbent MPs in the region, by
extorting bribes from them.
